Smart Watch Social Experiment

I want to talk about a social experiment I’m about to embark on.

Over the last couple of years, I’ll admit, I’ve sometimes had trouble putting my own phone down. GASP shock horror! The “Unplugged” Psychologist? What?!

I’m not immune.

I get asked questions all the time by adults about how hard it is for them to put their phone down, let alone their kids. (I’ve also had many parents ask me to write a version of my book for adults… and while that’s not currently on the cards, never say never!)

I’ve tried a few things in the past, screen time restrictions, limiting my apps, parental control apps, and I feel like sometimes, I still don’t quite get the balance right, especially on holidays with my family. The allure of sports news, my work emails, a message group with my cousins overseas, it all adds up.

I think I might have the solution. I’m going to (ironically, I know) use technology to solve my technology problem. Well, I’m going to try it.

I’ve gone today and gotten myself an Apple Watch. A smart watch, whatever you want to call it. This ones got cellular and Wi-Fi.

So I was recommended this particular watch by my friend Charlie Brown of gmee- he’s a tech guru and always has all the hardware answers I need. My plan for the next two weeks while I’m off work with my family is to see how I go using the Apple Watch, the smart watch, instead of always having my phone with me. Now there will be some exceptions, sure, such as FaceTiming grandparents, maybe using google maps, maybe logging in to my banking apps, responding to some of your DM’s on Instagram, and filming little updates for my social media along the way. My point is, this watch won’t replace my smart phone, my iPhone, I’m not saying or suggesting that, but I’m keen to see what happens, and I how I go being able to leave my phone behind sometimes.

I’ll jump on my blog and my social media accounts with updates, and I’ll let you know how I’m tracking.

I’m interested to see how this works, if this works, and whether it’s a workable solution for me. Ironically, a tech solution for my tech problem. I know, I know.

What do you think? Will this work? Will this help? I’m keen to find out…
